We are aware of a recent publication alleging that Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Ubiaja Annex, is facing significant challenges, including inadequate lighting, lack of essential drugs, and staff shortages. It’s essential to note that the Ubiaja Annex is a product of collaboration between the community and government, and its operations are guided by specific guidelines.
Context and Clarifications
Regarding the allegations, we would like to provide some context and clarifications:
- Electricity Challenges: ISTH, like many other healthcare institutions in Nigeria, is not immuned from the incessant power outages which has become the bane of our dear country. Public power supply is not reliable leaving us to seek alternatives in the form of fuel generators. We presently have two functioning generators serving the hospital. However, the cost of operating them on a 24hrs basis is quite prohibitive. This is why we have been working on providing a renewable and more sustainable solar power generator as back up.
- Essential Drugs: We acknowledge the importance of having essential drugs available at all times. However, we face challenges with supply chain disruptions and funding constraints. We are working closely with our suppliers and relevant authorities to address these issues and ensure a steady supply of essential medications. The head of pharmacy will now be feeding the annexes directly from multiple drug sources to ensure sufficient supply.
- Manpower: While it’s true that the healthcare sector faces manpower challenges nationwide, the Ubiaja Annex does not suffer from a shortage of staff. We have on ground very qualified and competent health care professionals with a zeal to provide services.
- Salary Arrears: We’d like to clarify that the payment of staff salaries is not within the control of the CEO. Staff members under the IPPIS system have been paid their salaries to date, while those on a “non- regular”employment are being given due attention in terms of remuneration subject to the availability of funds.
Review and Improvement
We want to assure well meaning members of the public that we remain committed to the provision of quality healthcare services to the people of Esanland and beyond. Moreso, we will continue to operate outreach centers in collaboration with host communities with a view of making health care more accessible.
In light of the recent developments, we are calling on all stakeholders to continue to collaborate with us with a view to providing better services to our communities.
Dr Ogbiti,
Coordinator Ubiaja annex,
Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.
